Thobani Hlophe BSc, MSc, PhD

Dr

Postdoctoral Research Assistant

TEL: 07596928122

Biography

Thobani completed his PhD in Hydrodynamics and Ocean Engineering at the University of Western Australia. Before this, he earned a Bachelor's and Master of Science in Mathematics in his native Southern Africa. Before starting his PhD, Thobani intermittently worked as a secondary school teacher, specialising in Physical Sciences.

His current research focuses on developing physics-based, phase-resolved models for predicting ocean surface waves over short time scales, with particular applications in ocean-related renewable energy generation. Additionally, Thobani has recently started investigating wave-structure interactions, with a focus on breaking wave loads on offshore platforms.

Research Interests

  • Wave prediction
  • Wave loads
  • Wave buoy motions and measurements

Current Projects

Wave Loading on Offshore Wind Turbines, a SeaSwallows project funded by EPSRC.
